Crow Fair was created in 1904 by an Indian government agent to bring the Crow Tribe of Indians into modern society. The early years of Crow Fair very similar to that of a County Fair. There were contests from best jam, butter, and household goods to woodcutting, cash prizes, and games.;
Today, Crow Fair is a very traditional affair with daily pow wow dancing and tribal ceremonies, but also includes more modern aspects such as the All Indian Rodeo. It is the largest outdoor pow wow in North America, with over 1,000 authentic tipis in the encampment. Mixed in are thousands more modern tents and RVs. In all, over 50,000 people gather for this celebration which runs from Thursday, August 17 through Monday, August 21, with the big days for tourists on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
